The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
