McDonald's has pulled a holiday advertisement created with generative AI after receiving significant online backlash.

The 45-second ad was produced using AI-generated video and was first published on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Audience Reaction and Removal

Following its publication, viewers on social media criticized the use of AI in the film. A number of called it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience represents an valuable lesson as we examine the effective use of AI," said a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was created for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed various scenarios that might go awry during the Christmas break, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Trend of AI Commercials

Campaigns that incorporate AI tools have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among prominent corporations, notably for the holiday campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly released back-to-back AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Since videos made with generative AI are susceptible to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also sparked fears about the replacement of human roles in the creative sector, with some commenters pointing out it might affect opportunities for actors.

Response from the Production Company

After the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

According to her, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then crafted in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the response for some AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis achieved a significant "positive feedback" from the public.

However, other businesses have likewise faced scrutiny for using AI in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The situation illustrates the evolving conversation within the marketing and production industries about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
