Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
