Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
