Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio
The mood at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Surprising Comeback
A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Discovering His Best Role
It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
